The Hook Test
How I used Instagram Trial Reels to rethink my hooks, test content with new audiences and take one client story from around 10K views to nearly 3 million views
Since day one, our goal has been simple: make everyday tasks easier for real people.
I need to say this because the internet loves turning one good result into a formula. I cannot promise you a viral Reel. I don't know the secret Instagram algorithm, and anybody telling you they can guarantee millions of views is making a promise they cannot control. What I can show you is what happened on my own business account. I had a client appointment that I had already turned into content. The first Reel did around 10,000 views. I went back to the same story, changed the way I introduced it, tested the new version using Instagram Trial Reels and watched it travel much further than I expected.
At the time I'm writing this, that Reel is approaching 3 million views. More importantly, it changed the way I think about content.
I stopped looking at every Reel as a finished product and started looking at some of my content as something I could test, learn from and improve. This guide is the breakdown. I'll show you what I changed, what I deliberately kept the same, the strategy I learned and applied, what the comments taught me, what happened to the rest of my account afterwards, and what I now look for before deciding that a piece of content "didn't work."
Before we start
The funny thing is, I'd already posted this appointment before.
My client was a little girl getting braids for the first time. She had a beautiful amount of long hair, so my original opening was:
“Look at all that hair.”
It wasn't a terrible hook.
The Reel did around 10K views. For a normal business account, that's not nothing. I could easily have left it there and moved on to the next client.
But there was a much better story sitting inside that appointment.
Her mum had told me that she'd been asking to have braids for two years.
That completely changed the context.
This wasn't simply a child sitting in my chair getting a hairstyle.
She had wanted this.
She had waited for it.
And when Mum finally said yes, she was completely invested in the whole experience.
I hadn't made any of that the centre of the first Reel.
