Prep & Cleanse – Get Your Hair and Scalp Ready
Bad prep = itchy scalp, flaking and braids that don’t last. Good prep = smooth install and a healthy scalp under your braids.
Clarifying Shampoo
What it does:
Removes product build-up, oils and dirt so your braids sit on clean hair.
As a braider, I want a fresh base before I add any gel. A good clarifying shampoo helps reduce itching and makes your braids last longer because they’re not fighting through layers of old product build up.
Why I love it:
The wash before you get braids
Clients who use a lot of gel/edge control
Oily scalps
Best for:
Lightweight Moisturising Conditioner
What it does:
Adds moisture back without coating the hair in heavy oils or butters.
If your hair is dry under your braids, you’ll feel it. I like a conditioner that leaves the hair soft but not slippery – I still need grip for braiding.
Why I love it:
Natural hair
Relaxed hair that tangles easily
Anyone who wants their hair to feel good when the braids come out
Best for:
Scalp Tonic / Pre-Braid Treatment (Optional But Helpful)
What it does:
Soothes the scalp and creates a cleaner environment under your braids.
Why I love it:
For sensitive or itchy scalps, a good scalp tonic helps clients last the full style without wanting to take it out early.
Best for:
Sensitive scalps
Clients who always complain of itching by week one
Styling Products – For Clean Parts and Sleek Braids
This is where most people get it wrong. The wrong gel or wax = white residue, flaking and dull-looking braids.
Shine ’n Jam Conditioning Gel – Extra Hold
What it is:
A conditioning gel with extra hold that keeps parts sharp and roots sleek when used correctly.
Why I love it:
I use Shine ’n Jam for parting and base control on knotless and stitch braids. It gives a clean, polished look without making the hair rock hard.
Best for:
Clean parting and feed-in braids
Clients with thick or frizz-prone hair
Braiders who struggle with flyaways
Styling Wax (e.g. Gummy Wax) – Maximum Grip
What it is:
A thick styling wax that gives stronger hold and grip than regular gel.
Why I love it:
When I need extra control – detailed stitch braids on different hair textures, stubborn short hairs or sharp edges – this is what I reach for. You don’t need a lot, but it makes a huge difference to the final result.
Best for:
Stitch braids
Very stubborn flyaways
Tight, clean designs around the hairline
All hair types
What it is:
A lightweight mousse I apply after braiding to melt flyaways and set the style.
Why I love it:
This is the finishing touch. It brings everything together, gives a soft shine and helps braids look “salon-finished” in photos and real life.
Best for:
Finishing knotless and box braids
Smoothing frizz on natural hair
Braiders who want that professional, polished look
Setting Mousse (e.g. ORS Wrap/Set Mousse)
Scalp Care & Refresh – Keep Your Braids Comfortable
Braids should look good and feel good. This is how I keep scalps happy.
Lightweight Scalp Oil / Serum
What it is:
A light oil or serum that nourishes the scalp without clogging the pores.
Why I love it:
I prefer formulas that don’t feel greasy or heavy. The goal is comfort and moisture, not suffocating the scalp under braids.
Best for:
Dry or flaky scalps
Clients wearing braids for 4–6 weeks
Anyone who wants their hair to feel healthy when the braids come out
Braid/Scalp Refresh Spray
What it is:
A refresher spray that cleans and freshens the scalp between washes.
Why I love it:
Perfect for gym-goers, long braids or hot weather. A good refresh spray helps with odour, sweat and mild itching.
Best for:
Long-term protective styles
Active clients
Hot climates or holidays
Sleep Protection – Keep Your Braids Looking New
Satin Bonnet or Scarf
What it is:
A satin bonnet or scarf that covers your braids at night.
Why I love it:
It reduces frizz, protects your edges and helps your style last significantly longer. It’s that simple.
Best for:
Everyone. No exceptions.
Satin Pillowcase (Backup)
What it is:
A satin pillowcase for the nights your bonnet “mysteriously disappears”.
Why I love it:
Even if your bonnet comes off, your hair still rubs against a smooth surface instead of cotton.
Best for:
People who hate bonnets
Extra protection on top of your bonnet/scarf
Tools & Accessories – The Small Things That Make a Big Difference
These are the tools I use daily in the studio.
Precision Rat Tail Comb
What it is:
A fine-tooth rat tail comb for sharp parts and sectioning.
Why I love it:
If your parts are messy, your braids will look messy. This is non-negotiable for me.
Best for:
Knotless, box braids, stitch braids
Clean, consistent parting
Sectioning Clips
What they are:
Clips that hold sections out of the way so you can work neatly.
Why I love them:
They keep my workspace organised, reduce tangling and help me move faster.
Best for:
Thick or long hair
Braiders who want to work more efficiently
Edge Brush & Small Detailing Tools
What they are:
Edge brushes and small detail tools for finishing touches.
Why I love them:
They help me refine the hairline and create soft, intentional baby hairs instead of harsh, plastered edges.
Best for:
Finishing styles for photos
Special occasions and content days
Studio & Content Gear – How I Record My Braiding Content
If you’re a braider creating content, your lights and tripod matter as much as your gel.
Phone Tripod (Extendable to Salon-Height)
What it is:
An extendable tripod that can go high enough to film clients in the chair.
Why I love it:
I can record braids from behind, above or the side without asking clients to move. It also doubles as a selfie stick for quick content.
Best for:
Braiders who film tutorials or BTS
Small studios with limited space
